What is a “mature” church…

Mark Beeson, the Pastor of Granger Community Church gives the best answer that I have ever heard…

“The ‘mature church’ is the church filled with immaturity.”

Anywhere in the world, whether plant or animal, the clear delineation of maturity is the ability to reproduce. Immature animals can’t reproduce. Immature plants can’t replicate themselves. The definition of maturity is being fully ripe, fully aged, so the connotation of maturity is obvious. Where you see maturity you’ll observe new life, babies and immaturity all over the place.

Maturity desires reproduction. Maturity tolerates juvenile behavior (from juveniles) while training its progeny for success in life. Maturity means little [babies] running all over the place.

If you attend a mature church, be prepared for immaturity. Where you find mature Christians you’ll find little babes in Christ running all over the place. In fact, if you have been looking for a church where everyone tithes and everyone serves–you’re not looking for a mature church, you are looking for a dying church – aged, impotent and bereft of spiritual newborns because everyone is mature.

Few things are more disturbing than a flock of adult believers standing around complaining that no one has come to Christ while refusing to do something that might result in new life. So when you bump into someone who acts immature at one of our services, don’t complain, and don’t be surprised. Instead, thank God the mature in Christ are busy delivering newborn babies to the family of God.”

How “mature” are you?

Sunday night thoughts…

  • Just got in from our Baptism & BBQ… not sure that words can express what I am feeling right now, but we saw 12 people get baptized this afternoon with more than seventy people there to celebrate that step!  That is VERY COOL!!!
  • We baptized MORE people today than there were members of Lifesong this time last year… unreal!
  • Oh yeah, this morning was really good too… Michael Moody from Journey Church spoke today and did an awesome job.  Unfortunately there was a problem with the podcast so we cant post it :-( .
  • The band was crazy mixed up today but they still did an incredible job… we are really blessed to have so much talent in the church.
  • Today was a sad day because today was Ryan’s (lead guitar player phenom) last regular day of playing as he has to get ready to hit the road to promote their new album… thanks bro for all you have done, I will REALLY miss seeing you every week (although there is ALWAYS a spot in the band for you :-) )
  • Did I mention that we baptized 12 people… I almost dropped one when I slipped into the deep end of the pool… I think he REALLY needed to go deep ;-) !
  • Lots of new faces around Lifesong… this Fall is going to be CRAZY!
  • Lifesong church is going to bless the teachers and staff at Beaverbrook Elementary school in the morning with breakfast to welcome them back.  It is because you are so faithful in your giving that Lifesong is able to make an IMPACT in our community.
  • It has been two weeks since I have preached… to say that I am ready would be an understatement!
  • I am so proud to be your pastor… get ready, Lifesong is just getting started!

Friday five…

I thought i would share my five goals for Lifesong to accomplish by our first birthday…

  • For twenty-five people to give their life to Christ through the ministry of Lifesong church… we are on our way with fourteen having taken that step since we launched!
  • For us to have 125 in average attendance… we have averaged 92 in the month of July.
  • For 60% of our adult attendance to be active in volunteering… we are at 40% now.  With our current numbers we need ten more people to step up and get involved.
  • For us to launch our Life Groups with 50% of our adults involved.
  • For 40% of our adults to have gone through Lifesong’s NEXT Step class, signed the Partnership Covenantand become partners of Lifesong church….  we are at 25% right now (some of you have gone through the class and NOT turned in your covenants, if you lost them let me know).

In order for these goals to become reality YOU must get involved and play YOUR part in Lifesong church… invite, volunteer, give, sacrifice and PRAY… God is just getting started!

Sunday night thoughts…

  • Good day today.
  • Today was the first time that I did not preach… it was great to have the chance to sit back and evaluate what we do.
  • Steve Stringer from Connection Church, a new church start launching this Fall just South of us, spoke for me today and did a good job… thanks Steve!
  • I think it is important that I NOT preach every Sunday… too many churches are personality driven.  Its also good for you to get a break from me (just don’t get used to it ;-) ).
  • I dropped in on our children’s environments today… just awesome!  The volunteer’s in there are really gifted at caring for and teaching kids about the love of Christ.  It kinda made me jealous, those kids were having a blast.  I had one guest tell me that their kid didn’t want to leave… Very cool!
  • The 5 million pound sound cart exploded today before the service… not good.  Some say it was an engineering issue, I think it was user error ;-) .
  • I have spent this last week planning out my preaching calendar for the rest of the year.  We have got some really cool things coming up… we are going to get Naked, Why? to have a Love Revolution :-)
  • Ten people have signed up to be baptized next Sunday at our Baptism & BBQ… WOW, its going to be an awesome day.  If you want to sign up to be baptized send an email to mark@lifesonglive.com .

  • Really excited about what God is doing at Lifesong… our church is growing during the Summer, look out this Fall!
  • We have GOT to get more people volunteering… NOW!
  • Saw “The Dark Knight” (the new Batman movie for those of you living under a rock ;-) )… decent movie but WAYYYYYYY too long (almost three hours)… oh well, at least my date was hot in a Kojak sort of way :-)
  • Baptism & BBQ next weekend!  We are going to throw a PARTY!  Dont miss out!  I am blown away at what God has done… unbelievable!
  • I wonder if anybody will show up Sunday?  (just being honest, I think that EVERY week ;-) )

I hate Christian bookstores…

Please don’t think less of me… I am just being honest.  I cant stand Christian bookstores.  I was reminded of this fact on Monday when I went into one to get a new Bible.  As I walked around the store I saw reminders of the danger of trying to create our own little sub-culture, don’t know what I mean, let me give you some examples…

  • “Christian” music… how exactly does a song get “Saved?”  Yes, I know there are alot of “secular” songs that are VERY inappropriate that are sung by VERY inappropriate people just for the money… but if you think that every “christian” singer is really a Disciple of Christ, I hate to tell you but it just ain’t so.
  • “Christian” toys… Does “Jesus Saves” really need to be stamped on the side of a  50 cent kazoo?  Which, by the way cost two bucks at a “Christian” bookstore!
  • “Christian” candy… “Hey, your breath stinks, Jesus cleaned up my life and gave me minty fresh breath!  Have a testamint!”
  • “Christian” purses… No, I am not making this up.  They were on sale for 50% off.

Maybe instead of trying to ISOLATE from the culture we should IMPACT the culture with the Message of Christ.  I believe that the Church should storm the gates of Hell on the offensive, and we might be more effective at doing that if we were more concerned with LIVING our Faith than ACCESSORIZING it.  What do you think?

Sunday night thoughts…

  • It’s Summer and we are growing… that ain’t normal, but I like it ! :-)
  • The volunteers of Lifesong simply amaze me.  Load-in went great and load out went faster than ever this morning, even in the rain!  You rock!
  • We have already had eight of you sign up to be baptized on the 27th during our Baptism & BBQ… this is going to be awesome, we should CELEBRATE the fact that lives are being changed and that is exactly what we are going to do!  If you want to sign up to be baptized send an email to mark@lifesonglive.com.
  • Remember… God wants to do “the Gideon” in your life.  If you dont know what that is, check out the podcast.
  • Had a chance to drop by The Journey Church on Saturday and talk with their pastor Michael Moody.  God is doing some awesome things over there and I really like Michael’s heart.  I hope we get to do that more often.
  • I really believe that God is going to blow us away this Fall.  We need more folks to start volunteering NOW!  If we wait until the growth hits we will always be behind.  Send an email to lifeline@lifesonglive.com to volunteer.
  • I have a suprise for everybody next week… show up Sunday to find out.

Friday five…

Five questions I am asking about my leadership of Lifesong church…

  1. How is MY walk with God going?
  2. What am I doing that I need to stop doing so that I can become a more effective leader of Lifesong church?
  3. What skills do I need to improve to become a better leader?    (I have got to work on my nunchuck skilz   :-)  )
  4. What can I do to get more people involved in volunteering?
  5. What do we need to do to prepare for what God has next?
